Antonio Conte took the English Premier league by storm by winning Chelsea the title in his first season in England. The London club who finished last season and claimed to have ‘down tools’ managed to put in a fantastic run of form of 13 straight wins to help them reach the ultimate trophy in England. In order for Chelsea to have another successful season next year what does Conte have to do in order to stop a repeat of the 15/16 season.
Summer Shopping Spree:
Conte has managed to win the Premier League with a small squad, however now competing in Europe’s elite competition Conte is going to need a much bigger squad to deal with being successful in both. The wingback positions are in special need of attention as Moses and Alonso will not manage to play 60 games in a season with the work rate that requires from them to be successful in their roles.
Keeping Hazard and Costa:
Two big names in Chelsea’s line up of Eden Hazard and Diego Costa have been in remarkable form this season with 20 goals from the striker and the Belgian in his highest scoring season ever. However, both names are attracting interest with Real Madrid especially interested in Hazard, which is not helpful when manager Zidane says he is an “admirer” of the Belgian play maker. If Chelsea were to loose either of these players it will be very difficult for Conte to find ‘perfect’ replacements for them.
Making Cahill Captain
Announced mid-way through the season Chelsea said that captain Joh Terry would no longer be at the club after this season. The last remaining survivor of the Chelsea spine that won the Champions league is going to be a big loss for the London club and Conte. However Gary Cahill has stepped up and has been a great captain this season and shows potential to fill the role perfectly. Also with having the most experience in the squad it would make the most sense to rely on the player that has managed to win everything with Chelsea.
These are just some of the big issues that Conte faces throughout the summer, if he can manage to complete some of these it is more than likely that the former Juventus manager could stage another successful season with Chelsea.
